Omega-3 protects your brain too, say Harvard researchers!

Here is another ‘smart’ reason to eat Omega-3 fats. A recent Harvard study shows that in addition to all their other proven health benefits, these friendly fatty acids help in safeguarding the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, a protective shield that defends the central nervous system from blood-borne bacteria, toxins and other pathogens.

A Harvard Medical School team led by professor, Chenghua Gu, reported in the May issue of Neuron that the blood-brain barrier remains closed by curbing a process that ferries molecules across cells in small bubbles. Omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in inhibiting the formation of these bubbles and thereby help in keeping the barrier closed and protected.
