Extra-virgin olive oil may prevent Alzheimer’s

It may be possible to ward off Alzheimer’s disease, a chronic and thus far incurable and irreversible neurodegenerative disease, simply by adding extra-virgin olive oil to your daily diet according to a study.

Published in prestigious journal Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology the study conducted by the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) in Philadelphia, says that extra-virgin olive oil — a key ingredient of Mediterranean food –appears to defend the brain from the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Experiments on mice, conducted as part of the study, showed that sustained administration of extra virgin olive oil led to changes both in the appearance of nerve cells and cognitive performance among the mice.

Explaining why many studies have pointed to olive oil as a super food, lead investigator Dr Domenico Praticò, a professor in the departments of Pharmacology and Microbiology and the Center for Translational Medicine at LKSOM , says that: “The oil oil is better than fruits and vegetables alone, and as a monounsaturated vegetable fat it is healthier than saturated animal fats.”
