Also known as neurological surgery, this is a medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Technologies & Procedures

BRAINS doctors use the latest technology in neurosurgery, such as intraoperative MRI computer-assisted brain surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, awake brain surgery and deep brain stimulation.

  • MRI Computer-Assisted brain surgery:In computer-assisted brain surgery, neurosurgeons use imaging technologies, such as MR (magnetic resonance), CT (computerized tomography) and PET (positron emission tomography) scans, to create a 3-D model of the brain, which allows them to plan the safest way to treat a condition. During surgery, the computer system precisely guides them to the area(s) of your brain requiring treatment.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) uses precisely focused radiation beams to treat tumors and other abnormal growths in the brain, spinal column and other body sites. This technology delivers high doses of radiation to the tumor with minimal exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Specialists carefully monitor doses to avoid the risk of radiation overexposure. No incision is made, minimizing the chance of infection or excessive bleeding. General anesthesia is not required for adults. In fact, it is surgery without a scalpel.
  • Awake brain surgery:Also called an awake craniotomy, this involves sedation and localized anesthesia to block out any pain. During the procedure the doctor will place your head in a fixed position to keep it still and ensure accuracy. He will then remove part of your skull to reach your brain. The patient would be awake during most of the surgery, but sedated and asleep while parts of his skull are being removed in the beginning of the surgery and put back at the end of the surgery.
  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS):A surgical treatment involving the implantation of a medical device called a brain pacemaker, which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. DBS in select brain regions has provided therapeutic benefits for otherwise-treatment-resistant movement and affective disorders such as chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, tremor, depression and dystonia.
